What is Kalashtami?
Kalashtami is also known as Bhairava Ashtami or Bhairava Jayanti. The day is celebrated as the birthday of Bhairava. He is the manifestation of Lord Shiva. When Lord Shiva takes up his angry avatar then comes the wrathful and fearsome Bhairava.
In the hills of Vaishnodevi, Jammu, on the day of Kalashtami, a gold or silver idol of Lord Bhairava is made and kept in a brass metal pot filled with water. It is worshipped and people offer gifts and prayers all day.
Falls on the day ?
Ashtami meaning eighth lunar day. Kalashtami falls on the eighth day in Krishna paksha. There are total twelve Kalashtami days in a year. If they fall on Tuesday or Sunday, they are considered even more pure and holy.
The Story Behind
According to the legendary story, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva were debating on the topic that who is superior to whom. Lord Shiva got angry with Lord Brahma’s remarks and ordered Bhairava, his aggressive manifestation to cut off Lord Brahma’s head. Thus Lord Brahma became four headed. Watching the sight, everyone was in fear and started worshipping Lord Bhairava to protect themselves from his wrath.

Lord Bhairava promises wealth and success.
- One who worship him with dedication and pure heart will be able to pass obstacles of life easily.
- One who observe a fast on Kalashtami is said to be liberated from sins and fear of death.
- One gets free from negativity, pain and sufferings.
- One who is suffering from serious health issues must observe the fast. He will be cured and gain health.
- No enemies will exist in the lives of people who worship Lord Bhairava.
- One will not face problems related to evil spirits, paranormal activities and ghosts.
What to Do ?
- People can observe a fast to please Lord Bhairava.
- An all night chanting and storytelling session is organized in honor of Lord Bhairava, Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
- Worship Lord Bhairava with loud aarti and drums and bells.
- As Lord Bhairava’s vehicle is a dog, offering food, milk, curd, and sweets to dogs on this day are auspicious. Especially black dogs.
- Organize Kalabhairava Ashtakam Pooja.
- One who is a devotee of Lord Shiva should get up before sunrise on this day and take bath.
- Offer Pooja and ask for blessings from your dead ancestors.
- Offer food and clothes to Brahmins and Kashi natives.
