The importance of Ekadasi fast

Ekadashi, also written as Ekadasi, is the eleventh  lunar day  of the shukla or krishna   paksha  of every lunar month  in the  Hindu calendar . The period continues from sunrise on the day of Ekadasi to sunrise on the day following Ekadasi. Two Ekadasis occur in one month according to the positions of the moon. Ekadashi refers to 11th day, lunar day. This day is also known as Hari Vasara because it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

THE STORY BEHIND

Ekadasi is the name of the Goddesss. She arose Lord Vishnu to defeat Demon Mura. Happy with her divine act, Lord Vishnu blessed her that anyone who keep Ekadasi fast will be liberated of their sins.  Full  eating is reprove on  Ekadasi and fasting on that day is certainly very pleasing to Lord Krishna.

IMPORTANCE

Ekadasi is a wonderful opportunity for all spiritual followers to show their devotional service and come closer to Krishna. The day is of fasting and prayers. It is usually observed by a partially fast. The day is spiritually beneficial. One who fasts on this day is considered to become free from the malefic planetary influences, becomes happy, gains peace of mind to think of Ishvara to attain moksha. In this way time can be saved for spiritual and religious activity, and one can purify himself both externally and internally.

FASTING RULES

  • On this day these two foods are believed to be contaminated by sin. Beans and grains are not eaten during Ekadasi.
  • One may use spices for cooking, although mustard seeds should be avoided.
  • Do not use powdered asafatoeda (hing), since it (generally) contains grains.
  • Sesame seeds are also to be avoided.
  • Only fruits, vegetables, nuts and milk products are eaten during Ekadasi.
  • Sleeping breaks the fast.
  • The real virtues of Ekadasi are properly hearing and chanting Krishna’s messages which are in themselves virtuous.

  • Do not use any cooking ingredients that might be mixed with grains.
  • Ghee that has been used to fry puris, or spices touched by hands dusted with chapati flourshould not be used.
  • Do not eat food made from rice on Ekadashi.
  • Do not apply oil on this day.
  • Do not eat meat and honey.
  • Avoid eating on a bell metal plate.

ENDING

A good way to end the fast is to expand the breakfast out a little. Rehydrate a little. Take something light which should be kind to your stomach. The devotee can breakfast with fruit.
